Mudge Land Use Bylaw Bulletin

To all Mudge Islanders, > > First, thank you to all of you who sent in letters to the Gabriola Island Local Trust Committee asking that they move to formalizing actual Bylaw amendments. > > Great news! Yesterday a number of Islanders attended the LTC meeting on Gabriola Island. Our Trustees, Heather O’Sullivan, Melanie Mamoser and Chair Laura Busheikin passed motions requesting that Islands Trust Staff prepare draft Bylaw amendments relating to Lot Coverage as well as Structure. They did not use the language we had suggested, which is ok, as all we were providing was a starting point for such changes. > > The Planning Staff will now do the work necessary, complete with a review to ensure that any changes we make, do not negatively impact other portions of our Land Use Bylaw. Again, an important step. > > You will recall that we had asked the Trustees to also consider sending the original Lot Coverage referral back to the Mudge Island Advisory Policy Commission for reconsideration. While not a direct motion, the Trustees have asked Staff to word the next referral on specific Bylaw language, in a manner that would allow such a review. > > All great news. I am not exactly clear on time frame or process, but think that the draft bylaws may be ready for the May 3rd, LTC meeting. If not then, certainly by the June meeting. The Trustees would like to have a Community Information Meeting on Mudge in the summer, where we can all participate in the discussion. From there, I think the process moves into the formal public meetings, with 1st to 3rd readings over successive meetings. Please understand, that I am not 100% sure of the process. > > Your letters helped tremendously in this endeavour. One of the difficult parts of being on a Commission such as the APC is trying to convince the decision makers that we really do represent the interests of our community. The volume of letters sent, made very clear the opinion of our Islanders. Thanks to all of you. > > While the process is far from done, this is a huge step. We would like to publicly acknowledge and thank our three Trustees, Heather, Melanie and Laura for truly listening to our community and moving our issue forward. > > Respectfully and on behalf of the entire APC, Susanne Jakobsen, Linda Carroll, Dale Erickson and John Mallet, I am > > Doug MacDonald
